A sink hole appeared in Ferry Road, Monifieth last night.
Part of the road heading west towards Dundee has been cordoned off this morning.
A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland received a report of a sink hole in Ferry Road, Monifieth yesterday evening at about 9pm.
“Diversions were put in place and the matter reported to the local authority.”
A council spokesperson said: “We attended the scene last night and put up signs and cones.
“This morning we will install signals on the road and tomorrow we will start to carry out excavations to find out what has caused the hole.”
