Coronavirus: Site of former Perth care home to become temporary healthcare facility

Beechgrove House will make way for much-needed affordable housing in Perth.

A Perth care home that has been empty since last August is to be re-purposed as a temporary base to accommodate people recuperating from illness.

Perth and Kinross Council said the former Beechgrove home would re-open in the next few weeks.

The aim is to free up space in hospitals for patients who are severely ill with Covid-19.

A council spokesperson said: “This is a temporary measure during the outbreak, to look after people who are recuperating from illness, are well enough to leave hospital but do not yet have the level of support they need at home.

“While people are staying within the facility, a social care package will be put in place for them so they can return to their own homes as quickly as possible.

“We would like to thank local residents in advance for their understanding and patience, given the increased activity at the site during this challenging time.”

Beechgrove care home closed in August 2019 as part of a £500,000 cost-cutting plan.

More than 2,500 people signed a petition to keep it open.

In February this year, councillors considered options to bring the empty building back into use. Perth City South SNP councillor, Sheila McCole proposed a range of health and social care purposes, as well as housing, and won backing from all parties.

She said she fully supported the new plan.
