A Nationalist politician has begged fellow MEPs not to let Scotland down after it voted to stay in the bloc.
Alyn Smith, who represents the SNP in the European Parliament, was given a standing ovation as he called for Scotland’s EU status to be protected.
He demanded that Scotland’s will from Thursday’s vote is respected.
Mr Smith said this morning: “There are a lot of things to be negotiated. We will need cool heads and warm hearts. But please remember this – Scotland did not let you down please, I beg you, do not let Scotland down now.”
Scotland faces being taken out of the EU against its wishes because of votes cast in England and Wales.
Earlier, Nigel Farage was jeered as he goaded his MEP colleagues.
The UKIP leader mocked the parliamentarians – to a chorus of boos – for never having a “proper job”.
He then accused them of being “in denial” about the euro crisis, immigration and the imposition “by stealth, by deception, without ever telling the truth” of a political union.
