Locals have expressed their shock after the discovery of a man’s body in Carnoustie.

Residents woke to a substantial police presence in Kinloch Street on Sunday, with one local describing the incident as having ”smashed our illusion of safety”.

The dead man, a 59-year-old named locally as Anthony English, was found in a house in the street.

Most neighbours were unaware of any incident before discovering police activity outside their front doors.

Officers in full body armour, forensic detectives and specialists numbered among the several dozen officers seen over the course of the day.

Police cordoned off the junction of Kinloch Street and Brown Street and closed several surrounding roads.

One pensioner who lives nearby described herself as a very early riser. But she did not hear any commotion, and was shocked at the sheer scale of the police operation.

”We don’t get trouble much along this way. This is a very quiet place in a quiet town, but it has really opened my eyes,” she said.

”To have a death on the doorstep, right in the middle of the community like this, I’m lost for words.”

Another Kinloch Street resident said her father was up long before the police arrived and had no idea what had occurred.

However, she said the household was advised the street would remain closed for the rest of the day.

”I can’t believe this has happened here,” she said. ”We’ve had problems here before but never so close. It’s literally come to our doorstep and it’s smashed our illusion of safety.

”On a Sunday you can look out the window here and not see a soul walk past. So to have all this circus going on outside really brings it home.”

A force spokesman said officers attended the address at 8.10am.

He added: ”Inquiries are ongoing into the death, which is being treated as suspicious.”

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed or heard a disturbance in the area in the early hours of Sunday morning to contact them on 0300 111 2222 or speak to any officer.

It is understood two people are helping police with their inquiries.
