Plea to extend car park at Montrose Railway Station

A plea has been made for additional parking at Montrose Railway Station after passenger numbers jumped.

Councillor David May had urged Network Rail to create an additional car park at a disused yard adjacent to the town’s station but a Network Rail spokesman said there was no chance the site could be used as parking.

The spokesman said: “The land in question is currently leased to a rail freight operating company and is classified a part of the operational railway.

“We could not put the area to an alternative purpose as it may be needed for railway use in the future.”

Latest figures from the Office of Rail Regulation revealed that more than 385,000 passengers travelled to and from Montrose last year the highest rates in more than a decade.

Mr May said residents struggle to park their vehicles after 7.30am and wanted Network Rail to extend the car park. Passengers who cannot get a parking space are forced to park at Lower Hall Street.

Mr May has also raised concerns over the availability of spaces in the town centre because they are taken up by rail passengers.
