There have been fresh calls for a flyover to built on the A90 at Laurencekirk after a video showing a bus blocking the southbound lanes of the notorious junction was posted online.
The video below shows the bus initially straddling both lanes before it edges forward, still leaving the outside lane completely blocked.
Now the Angus Liberal Democrats have said the video shows the pressing need for a flyover.
Montrose Liberal Democrat Councillor David May said: “That is one of the most terrifying pictures I have seen and what is truly startling is having it on video as well. This demonstrates the need for a flyover so much more clearly than we could ever do, even with thousands of signatures on Jill’s two petitions, hundreds of photos and 10 years of campaigning.”
“It puts the danger of the junction so starkly that it is plain to see for everyone. Thankfully there was no major accident arising from this.”
Scottish Lib Dem campaigner for Angus, Sanjay Samani, said: “Seeing the video this evening on Facebook was unbelievable. Those of us who have backed Jill Fotheringham’s campaign for a flyover for many years know all too well how dangerous the junction is. But this video shows so clearly that there is a massive safety issue, it is a relief that no-one was hurt.”
The bus belongs to Laurencekirk firm MW Nicoll.
The video was filmed by Alain Graham from Noranside.
Mr Graham, who is the owner of Angus Mini Plant Hire, said: “I recorded this video using my dash cam
“I shared it globally on Facebook last night, as I wanted as many people as possible to be aware of this sort of poor driving at this junction.
“Just as well my 4×4 and the truck in Lane 1 have good brakes, travelling at 50mph and weighing over two tonnes and probably in excess of 10 tonnes for the truck, this would have made a mess of the bus and passengers if our brakes had failed.”Were you on the bus? If so please contact smorkis@thecourier.co.ukFifteen months ago the companysacked a driver for stackingup beside two vehicles in the central reservation of the junction during rush hour.
No one from the firm was available for comment this morning.
The A937 is the only A-class road on the A90 without a graded junction, and has long been known as notorious and dangerous.
A recent study found a flyover would increase safety at the accident blackspot.
