A woman has died in a fire in a tragic end to the year in Monifieth.
Police say they were called to the upstairs flat in North Bank Street at around 10.30pm on Hogmanay.
Although the victim has not been officially identified, neighbours said the flat belonged to an older woman who lived alone.
Laura Hillian, 61, stays across the road and said she was unaware of the tragedy until she got up this morning to walk her dog.
She said: “I was in but I’d gone to bed. I was up early this morning and saw the police car sitting.
“My husband was taken into hospital yesterday, so I was thinking ‘what a New Year I’ve got sitting on my own’ and then I heard this.
“It puts everything in perspective. It’s so sad.”
A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: “There was one female fatality. We were called out to the property in Monifieth at 10.32pm.
“The fire started in the bedroom. The crews used four breathing apparatus and one hose reel.”
