A marine’s body was found at RM Condor military base, by Arbroath, late last night.
Inspector Neil Anderson of Tayside Police said officers attended as part of an ongoing inquiry after a serving marine had been reported missing from an address in Arbroath earlier that evening.
Paramedics were also called, but tragically the 35-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
His details have not yet been released.
A spokeswoman for the Royal Navy Fleet said: “We can confirm a member of 45 Commando was found dead last night. The next of kin have already been informed and Tayside Police are leading the investigation at the moment.”
The coastguard said police found the body on the mainland 55 minutes after a large-scale search involving all local coastguard assets. Crews from Arbroath, Carnoustie and Montrose along with the inshore and all-weather lifeboats from Arbroath RNLI joined in the search for the marine around 11pm.
Police said there are no apparent suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident. As with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
The search for another local Royal Marine, Ralph Hebden, is now in its third week after his disappearance in Arbroath on Sunday, March 11.
Police today confirmed the man’s death is unrelated to Mr Hebden’s disappearance and investigations into that matter are still ongoing.
