Abertay University has asked Dundee residents to face up to their latest study.
As part of Dundee Science Festival, psychology and sociology students at the university have asked people to donate pictures of their face for science.
The group will then use them to produce the image of an average Dundonian.
The aim is to create a face made up of the eyes, ears, noses, lips, cheeks and chins of as many people as possible.
The team arrived at the Overgate Shopping Centre at the weekend and will also be there next weekend, with the aim of taking snaps of nearly 1,000 people’s faces.
The image of the complete Dundee local will be revealed by psychology professor Dr Chris Watkins at his Face of Dundee event, which is part of Dundee Science Festival, in early November.
Dr Watkins, who has undertaken similar research in the English city of Peterborough, explained the process behind the technology which will give Dundee an official face.
He said: “Lots of scientific research has used computer graphic technology to capture the average, or prototypical, appearance of a set of faces.
“We can use this computer graphic research as we try to create a typical face for the city.
“The final Face of Dundee will extract the average shape, colour and texture features of all those who take part, enabling us to gain a tangible impression of the average resident.”
He also thanked the students who have embraced the project and joined him at the stall.
He said: “My students have been really good at helping me with this, and I’m glad they seem to be backing the research.
“I hope they can get between at least 500 and 1,000 people involved.”
Dr Watkins also encouraged those who have not yet contributed their facial features to attend the photo opportunities on Saturday and Sunday.
He said: “If you live or were born in a Dundee postcode and can spare a few minutes of your time, we would be delighted if you would like to get involved.
“There’s still time to visit us next weekend.”
