Garage owner Archie Alles’ death stuns Dundee business community

One of Dundee’s best-known small garage owners, Archie Alles of Archie’s Tyre and Auto Centre Ltd in Guthrie Street, has been found dead.

It is believed Mr Alles’ body was discovered by a member of staff when he arrived to open up the premises on Thursday morning.

His death has shocked the motor trade and his loyal customers at the busy garage, some of whom arrived at the premises to find the shutters down and police officers guarding the door.

Police confirmed they had been called to the premises at 8.20am but added there were no apparent suspicious circumstances.

However, as with all sudden deaths, a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal. Paramedics also attended but it is understood Mr Alles (58), who was married to Margaret, was found to be already dead.

Archie had run the garage for more than 30 years, firstly at Fyffe Street and then from around 1993 at Guthrie Street.

His former business partner and landlord Graham Bradley, of Bradley Removals and Storage Group, said he was “devastated” by the news.

“It is devastating for all of us, I was his landlord. We did start up the business together about 30 years ago.

“He was a first-class business partner, who worked very hard to build the business and provided a very good service to his customers.

“I find it very difficult to come to terms with. Margaret is absolutely devastated obviously. Archie was a popular and well-respected businessman. I can’t speak highly enough of him.”

Police raced to the scene and two police officers stood guard at the entrance outside the shutters at the premises.

Stunned staff members and customers stood outside the business yesterday morning as the tragedy unfolded but declined to comment.

A sign has been put up outside the business saying it was closed due to bereavement and until further notice.
