Man held after Errol resident John McMurchie found dying in Dundee street

The police in Dundee have been questioning a suspect after a 50-year-old man was found dying in the street.

The victim has been named as John McMurchie, who lived in the village of Errol in the Carse of Gowrie.

A 63-year-old man has been detained in connection with the tragedy.

Mr McMurchie’s body was found by passers-by lying in Fintry Terrace at around 4am on Sunday morning.

Two men stopped their car and tried to help him, but he was rushed to Ninewells Hospital suffering serious injuries and died a short time later.

A large section of Fintry Terrace was cordoned off for a forensic investigation. A row of houses was also taped off, with only residents being allowed in and out.

The scene is close to Longhaugh police station and Whitfield’s shopping centre.

Police have not released any details of the nature of Mr McMurchie’s injuries or whether a weapon was involved.

A spokesman said: “The 50-year-old man was found by two passers-by who alerted the police and ambulance services.

“He was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee where sadly he died a short time later.

“The area where the man was found has been cordoned off to allow a full and thorough forensic search to take place.

“A house in Murrayfield Gardens has also been cordoned off as part of the inquiry.

“Officers are in the process of speaking to witnesses and carrying out door-to-door enquiries in the area in a bid to establish what may have happened.

“A 63-year-old man has been detained in connection with the incident.”
