A Dundee woman almost killed her son when she threw a kitchen knife at his chest after his 18th birthday party, the sheriff court has heard.
Susan Barron, 36, of Candle Lane, committed the offence against her son, Jordan, on September 15 last year.
She admitted that, at Candle Lane, she culpably and recklessly threw a knife, which struck Jordan Barron on the body to his severe injury and to the danger of his life.
The court heard the birthday party continued into a second day and, at about 12pm on the Saturday, Jordan was drunk and slurring his words.
He became emotional and the court heard his mother then became angry and told the others at the party to leave.
Depute fiscal Trina Sinclair said Barron entered the bedroom where her son was and then left.
Ms Sinclair said Barron returned to the bedroom carrying two knives in her hand one a large silver kitchen knife, and the other a smaller kitchen knife.
She said Barron dropped the large knife and then picked it up again and threw it in her son’s direction from two metres.
Ms Sinclair said: “It struck the complainer in the middle of the chest and the wound was bleeding heavily.
“The accused said to police: ‘My son, my son, I never meant it’. She was hysterical and was handcuffed for her own safety.”
Ms Sinclair added: “The accused said ‘he was lying on the bed and I threw the knife at him. I thought it would miss him’.”
Jordan was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital where his injuries were described as life-threatening.
The court heard that he suffered a stab wound of one centimetre in width, and during the assessment his condition deteriorated and he had to be anaesthetised.
He was also given a blood transfusion.
Ms Sinclair said: “Medical opinion is that had he not been given that treatment immediately he would have died.”
He was later taken to intensive care and subsequently transferred to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Barron’s lawyer, David Sinclair, said: “She’s a 36-year-old single female. She has something of a record around 1999, with nothing since then.”
Sheriff George Way said: “I’m going to have to have reports.”
Sentence was deferred until August 19.
