The dream of a transformed Dundee playpark has become a reality as the venture is set to receive a share of more than £140,000.
Scottish Government funding will see Roseangle Playpark benefit from £62,252 to replace the play equipment. Dawson Park will also gain £78,595 to be used to reinstate four tennis courts at the Broughty Ferry facility.
The Friends of Magdalen Green community group have been fundraising to completely replace the facilities since last summer and this latest funding brings the project well within grasp.
Alice La Rooy, of the fundraising committee, said: “It is just absolutely amazing. The committee has been really supportive and a huge proportion of the fundraising so far has come from them but this makes the project viable.
“Everyone loves the park but the parents whose kids play there are really keen to get the facilities replaced.”
The £62,252 added to the £52,000 already raised brings the total almost to the target of between £120,000 and £150,000.
Fundraising events planned by the group will still go ahead to bring in the rest of the money needed. It will be spent completely resurfacing the area and installing new equipment.
Councillor Fraser MacPherson, secretary of the Friends of Magdalen Green, said: “We owe a great deal of gratitude to Alice La Rooy and Sharon Dickie for all their hard work, as well as all the others on the committee who have helped make the campaign so successful.”
The money has been made available through the Active Places scheme.
Craig Melville, Dundee City Council’s environment convener, said the money being used to bring four new tennis courts to Dawson Park was excellent news.
He said: “We have already renovated several tennis courts and it’s great that the work can now get under way at Dawson Park. I hope the improvements will encourage more participation.”
