Universities seeking in excess of £3.2m for derelict Hillside halls of residence

Derelict halls of residence in the west end of Dundee that have become a target for vandals and fire-raisers have been put on the market for offers over £3.2 million.

Hillside halls, which lie on a six-acre site between Yarrow Terrace and Dalrymple Street, are jointly owned by Dundee and Abertay universities.

The flats closed in the summer of 2007 and the boarded up blocks have been the subject of repeated complaints from local residents since.

Developers were interested in the site two years ago, but lengthy negotiations over the potential purchase proved fruitless.

Now the Hillside site is back on the market, but the new owner would require planning permission before embarking on construction work.

Agent Thorntons Property Services describes the site as, “a rare opportunity to acquire an extensive development site within an already established residential area of Dundee where there is a need for quality housing.”ConcernLocal councillor Bob Duncan has previously expressed concern over the ongoing delays in refurbishing the halls.

“I totally welcome this news,” he said. “It is just an eyesore as it stands and it’s a target for vandals. The sooner something can be done with it the better.

“It really is an ideal site for commercial development.

“It is surrounded by very nice houses and it would just be a great site to be developed into housing.”

A Dundee University spokesman confirmed, “This property was previously used as student residences by both Dundee and Abertay universities, but has become surplus to requirements with both institutions having built new student accommodation in recent years.

“As a result, the property has now been placed on the market.”
