A service to remember those who gave their lives at the Battle of Loos has been held on the Dundee Law.
Members of The Black Watch regiment past and present gathered for a special commemoration at the city’s war memorial to pay tribute to the thousands who made the sacrifice on the battlefield in France 100 years ago.
The beacon at the top of the monument was lit at 6.30am to mark the first British attack on German lines.
Around 86,000 casualties were suffered by both sides and it is said there was barely a household in Dundee that was not affected by the losses.
The event marks the start of a weekend of services to mark the 100th anniversary of the battle.
The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will attend a parade of 300 veterans and 250 soldiers on Saturday afternoon while a Black Watch commemoration service will be held at Dundee Parish Church (St Mary’s) on Sunday.
