Gamers queued up at midnight to get their hands on a copy of one of the most anticipated releases in history, GTA V.
The fifth instalment of the Grand Theft Auto series, which can trace its roots back to DMA Design in Dundee, was released this morning, with stores across the country and different timezones holding special midnight events to mark the occasion.
Although there was some controversy with reports of some online retailers sending out copies ahead of the embargo, for most this was their first chance to sample Rockstar’s latest creation.
The Courier was at Game in Dundee to watch the crowds gather.
A queue of hundreds snaked its way right along the Murraygate as the store counted down to the launch..embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; padding-top: 30px; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; height: auto; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }
Shop manager Sally May-Collins said: “It’s fantastic. We knew it was going to be big but we didn’t think it was going to be this big!
“The queue out there is huge and there’s a really great buzz. Everybody is so excited.”
Sally added: “The fact we’ve had a couple of people turn up from Rockstar because Dundee is where it all started is brilliant.”
One of the gamers told us: “I’m very excited. I’ve been waiting ages a couple of years. It’s finally here it’s the best game ever.”
The game reportedly cost around £170 million to make and market but experts estimate it could make £1 billion in the first year of sales.
