VIDEO: Major fire at Strathmartine Hospital

Dozens of firefighters battled a blaze at the former Strathmartine Hospital building.

Flames engulfed the roof of the derelict building early on Monday afternoon and smoke could be seen for several miles.

Local resident Nicole Duncan, 27, said: “It appears to be the main building.

“The flames coming out of the roof are bright orange.It’s a quiet area so it’s quite shocking to see.

“It’s set back from all the other houses so I don’t think anybody is in any danger.

“We’re a bit far out for squatters so I don’t think anyone will be in there.”For more on this story, see Tuesday’s CourierLocal resident Fiona Brough saw the fire develop.

She said: “I had just returned from a walk around that area. I was coming back up Strathmartine Road when I noticed smoke coming from the building, so I got my long-lens camera to try and get a better look.

“It was burning for about two hours but it seems to be under control now.

“It looks like the damage is quite severe, though I can’t be sure. A fire like that could have gutted the whole building, or it could have just been in the roof.

“There was a fire there a couple of weeks ago, you can see in the roof that it was damaged before.

“I was looking in the windows and couldn’t see the flame so I’m not sure if the fire went through multiple floors or if it was only in the roof.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service used hose reels to attempt to extinguish the flames. A command support unit and specialist equipment were also in use.

The fire started after 1.30pm.

The building and surrounding siteis the subject of large-scale housing proposalsbut has been derelict for a decade,making it a target for vandalsin the past.

The hospital was originally part of an asylum and orphanage in Baldovan, on the outskirts of Dundee. It was decommissioned in the late 1980s and shut in 2003.
