After more than four hours of protest, deputations and debate on Monday evening, the council had decreed that the school will shut in 2016. Its pupils and future generations of Menzieshill, Lochee and Charleston youngsters will instead be schooled at the new Harris Academy. Passionate pleas made by pupils, parents and campaigners failed to sway enough votes in a charged City Chambers. Closure was passed by 18 votes to 14, with one abstention. Education chiefs said the decision was in the best interest of pupils who will benefit from some of the country’s finest facilities. Opponents have, however, pledged that their fight will go on, with a 2,500-name petition now set to be delivered tothe Scottish Parliament.
