Traffic building up in the city centre during the bridge closure.

The Tay Road Bridge has been closed to all traffic because of 80mph winds.

The Forth Road Bridge has also been closed to all but cars as Scotland faces a third day of weather disruption.

The Tay Road Bridge was closed just at 11.15am after winds topped speeds of 80 miles per hour, including one gust at 87.2 miles per hour

It’s forecast for the winds to continue until at least 4pm before dropping below the 80mph mark which will allow cars to travel over the bridge again. However, twind speeds are then forecast to pick up again later.

The bridge was open to cars throughout the morning rush hour but as the squalls increased in intensity this morning the decision was taken to close to all traffic until the storm dies down.UPDATE: The bridge reopened to cars shortly before 4pm. You can check the bridge status by clicking hereBridge manager Alan Hutchison said: “We closed the bridge at 11.15am after we got gusts of over 80mph.

“The highest gust we experienced was 87mph, which is pretty windy

“It was cars only before it reached 80mph but as the winds increased we had to close it entirely.

“Our Met office forecast is for it to continue until about 4pm, but it mainly depends on the squalls we experience

“The squalls come down the river and can stop for a few minutes but start up again, so it needs to be below 80mph for the threshold period of half an hour before we can reopen the bridge again.

Yesterday, drivers were warned to follow weather restrictions on the bridge after some vehicles were caught ignoring closure signs

Officers working at the bridge say they have recorded vehicles driving over despite restrictions being in place during recent high winds.

The bridge closes to double decker buses when winds hit 45mph, while cars only are allowed over when the winds are at 60mph. The bridge closes to all traffic if winds get up to 80mph.

Winds in excess of 74 miles per hour are classified as hurricane force.
