Fife towns in running for Plook on the Plinth award

Leven is in the running for the unenviable title.

Two Fife towns are in the running for what is arguably Scotland’s most unwanted title.

Leven and Lochgelly are competing to be named the most dismal towns in the country after being nominated for a Plook on the Plinth Carbuncle Award.

They are up against Aberdeen, Cumbernauld and Maddiston in Falkirk. The Plook on the Plinth award was established by Urban Realm magazine in 2000 to provoke debate.

Leven was nominated by historian Eric Eunson, who described the town as “a grim post-industrial wasteland with regressive pretensions to being a seaside resort because it happens to have some sand”.

Lochgelly’s nomination came from an anonymous resident who claimed the majority of the town was in the top 5% of multiple deprivation in Scotland despite hosting one of Europe’s largest petrochemical plants.
