A nine-year-old pedestrian died after a collision with a black Vauxhall Corsa on the A92 at Glenrothes last night.
The accident occurred just between the Cadham and Balfarg junctions on the A92 at 5.40pm.
The road was closed for several hours as ambulance crews treated the casualty before taking him to hospital under a police escort.
Police Scotland has now confirmed the boy, who is from Glenrothes, died of his injuries at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy last night.
The incident brought severe delays to what is one of Fife’s busiest roads, with traffic diverted via Western Avenue and Cadham Road in Glenrothes.
A police investigation team was at the scene throughout the evening trying to determine the circumstances of the collision.
Officers are now appealing for any witnesses to the accident to contact them on 101 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Inspector Brenda Sinclair said: “Tragically this collision has resulted in the loss of a young boy’s life and our thoughts are with his family at this harrowing time. “We are appealing for any drivers or pedestrians who may have been on the A92 at the time of the collision to come forward and help establish the full circumstances of the incident.”
