Life in the north of Kirkcaldy appears to be returning to normal even though an armed bank robber remains at large.
Schools and businesses were put into lockdown after the incident at the Bank of Scotland in Mitchelston Industrial Estate on Wednesday afternoon.
Pupils returned to class as normal on Thursday, but the bank stayed closed to the public as staff recovered from their ordeal.
Police confirmed that they are still hunting for the man who is thought to have held up a grey Skoda Octavia taxi at around 1.30pm on Wednesday before sending the terrified taxi driver under duress in to demand property from workers at the bank in Carberry Place.
It is understood some sort of bomb threat was mentioned during the robbery, which prompted the arrival of a bomb disposal unit, but police confirmed there were no explosives found.
Superintendent Derek McEwan added that there was “nothing which was going to pose a risk to any members of the public”, but said a number of items were found nearby which were removed by authorities. As it happened: Armed robbery drama in KirkcaldyAnd reports that the man strapped some sort of device to the taxi driver involved have also been dismissed by police.
The man seized the cash from the taxi driver before running off on foot along Carberry Road, sparking a massive police manhunt.
Officers are still trying to find the man believed to be responsible, who was described as “heavily built” and wearing dark glasses, a dark baseball cap, possibly green, a thick blue jacket and tracksuit bottoms.
No-one else is understood to be involved.
A spokeswoman for the Bank of Scotland said: “The decision was made not to open the branch today as colleagues are understandably shaken by yesterday’s incident.
“The branch will be open tomorrow for business as usual. We thank customers for their understanding and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
