‘My health is being put at risk’ Perthshire woman’s fears after lethal asbestos discovered in home

A disabled woman has been left fearing for her health after asbestos was discovered at her home and left exposed by the council for weeks.

Fiona Low, who has two different lung conditions, says she first reported the problem to Perth and Kinross Council before Christmas.

Workers are yet to deal with the substance, which is known to be carcinogenic.

Ms Low, who lives in Longforgan, fears she has been exposed to harmful spores as she is forced to sleep with her bedroom windows open due to emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The 57-year-old said: “It started in December when I was out the back and I noticed that the soffit boards around the house were broken.

“It took a month for someone to come out to us and the man from the council took one look at it and said it was asbestos and it was beginning to degrade.

“We were told we would need a specialist to come up and check it. That happened weeks and weeks ago but we are still waiting for them to come and haul it all out.

“The man from the asbestos company had a can of spray stuff and sprayed the asbestos. He told us that it would maybe keep it together but he doubted it.

Ms Low added: “I’ve been on the phone to the council about 12 times since December. They don’t seem to think it’s a priority, but we do.

“I have to sleep with my bedroom window open because of my lung condition and we are beginning to get spores through it. We looked on the internet and the (asbestos) spores that we saw online are very similar to these ones.

“We are worried sick because of my lungs my health is being put at risk.

“I’m very angry because I thought that once they discovered it was asbestos it would be a priority job.

“It all comes down to money. I think they are waiting until the new budget in April, but I don’t think that should happen. I can’t wait that long, especially since I’ve been waiting since December.

“All I want is for them to fix this.”

A spokeswoman for Perth and Kinross Council said they were not informed of the damage until the new year and that they would be repairing the property imminently.

She said: “Perth and Kinross Council takes the complaints of this nature very seriously.

“The council arranged for the soffit boards, which are on the exterior of the building, to be inspected and sampled by a licensed asbestos consultant after the tenant contacted us in January.

“The material was confirmed as being asbestos cement. However, it has not been disturbed and is not considered to present an immediate danger.”
