A major rescue operation has been stood down after reports a person had been swept into the swollen River Tay were found to be a false alarm.
Emergency services attended at Pitnacree Bridge near Grandtully in Perthshire after someone reported seeing a person going into the water.
The fire service launched a major rescue operation at the river around 10am on Wednesday morning but police have since confirmed it was a false alarm with good intent.
A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “The river was searched twice but nothing was found.”
A Police Scotland spokeswoman added: “The search confirmed it was debris in the water.”
It is understood the mistaken item was a black bag.
Several flood warnings remain in place throughout Tayside and Fife.
