The future of St Johnstone Football Club is under threat, according to owner Geoff Brown.
He claims planning decisions taken in recent months “will be detrimental to the club’s future viability”.
He has hit out at Perth and Kinross Council after the authority refused permission for a major housing development close to the club’s McDiarmid Park.
The Scottish Premier League team was set to bank a windfall by selling land at the ground for a link road between Perth and the Almond Valley Village development.
Such was the sum involved, the cash-strapped club had been prepared to allow a stand at the stadium to be knocked down for the road to be built.
However, Almond Valley was rejected last year and a last-gasp bid to resurrect it failed earlier this week.
Former council planning chief Denis Munro appeared with Mr Brown to address councillors on St Johnstone’s behalf on Wednesday. The authority was meeting to approve a proposed local development plan for submission to Scottish ministers.
In a blistering attack, Mr Brown told councillors: “These decisions make no sense to me and they will be detrimental to the club’s future viability.”
