The SNP took the first step to a Dundee clean sweep when Chris Law surged to victory in Dundee West.
In a dramatic night, Mr Law ended the party’s 65-year grip on the constituency when he overturned retiring MP Jim McGovern’s 7,000-plus majority, winning a remarkable 27,684 votes.
The Labour party had been hoping candidate Michael Marra could defend the seat but as the ballots began to be totted up that looked increasingly unlikely.
In his victory speech, Mr Law said the SNP had “placed Labour in Dundee into retirment” and added that he would be “Dundee’s man in Westminster, not Westminster’s man in Dundee.”
The result means it is the first time Dundee West has not been represented by Labour.
Mr Marra said: “With the polls what they were, we were always up against it.
“We had a campaign that focused on local issues and I will continue to do that.”
He added: “I’ve already spoken to Chris Law about a meeting to discuss my jobs plan for the city, which will work.
“Ultimately, this result will be just a footnote among all the results of tonight.”
Result:
C Law (SNP) – 27,684

N Ross (Conservative) – 3,852
P Hinchion (Green) – 1,225
