Former Dundee manager Barry Smith will be appointed manager of Alloa later today, Courier Sport understands.
And, ironically, his first game in charge will be against the club which sacked him.
Smith has beaten competition from another ex-Dark Blues boss, Alex Rae, for the post at Recreation Park and is expected to be unveiled at a press conference this afternoon.
Rae was sacked as assistant manager at Blackpool a few days ago.
Smith is a Dark Blues legend, who had a long playing career at Dundee and captained the side.
He took over as manager in the hardest of times, steering them to First Division safety despite a 25-point deduction for the club entering administration.
Dundee were promoted to the SPL at the 11th hour after Rangers were thrown out of the league, and a squad that was ill-equipped for the top flight struggled badly.
Smith paid the price and was sacked around a year ago.
He then got a job on the coaching staff at Ross County.
A section of the Dundee support has turned against Smith’s replacement, John Brown, as a result of a number of poor recent performances – particularly at home.
And now, Smith could make Brown’s life even more uncomfortable if his new team beat Dundee on Saturday. For the latest on this story, see Friday’s Courier or try our digital edition.
