Dundee striker Craig Wighton scored a hat-trick as Scotland’s under-17 side got their European Championship qualifying campaign off to a great start with a 3-1 win over hosts Slovenia.
Wighton gave Scotland the lead five minutes from half-time from the penalty spot after he had been fouled, with the Dens Park youngster doubling the lead two minutes after the restart.
Slovenia pulled a goal through Luka unjara and were piling on the pressure for a leveller until Wighton ensured Scotland’s success eight minutes before the end.
Scotland coach Scott Booth said: “I’m delighted to get a win in the opening game and was happy with the amount of chances we created. Slovenia came back into the game in the second half but I was pleased with how we battled.
“We’ve put a lot into this game, will recover and be ready for the Wales game on Wednesday.”
The other two teams in the group, Wales and Hungary, played out a 5-5 draw, with the Scots taking on the Welsh tomorrow and completing their group on Saturday.
The top two sides proceed to the elite round of qualification.
