Montrose boss George Shields resigned after only eight months in charge, with Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat to East Fife proving to be the final straw.
The Gable Endies sit second bottom of League 2, just a point ahead of an East Stirling side who have three games in hand, and Shields decided that enough was enough after meeting with the Links Park Board on Sunday morning.
Former Brechin City coach Shields was appointed to the position last May to replace Stuart Garden after a spell as caretaker boss and brought in former Scotland defender Lee Wilkie as his assistant.
Shields had been a coach and assistant manager with the Gable Endies as well as having a role in youth development at the club before getting the top job.
This season started well with four wins in their first six league games.
However, with only two wins since then Shields offered his resignation which was accepted.
To the game itself, the Fifers went ahead on 32 minutes.
Fraser Mullen was released down the left and his cross was headed home by Sean Dickson.
Montrose finished the half strongly and David Banjo had a shot and a header off target.
Two minutes into the second half Jordan Allan sent in a cross and Ross Campbell put the ball wide when a goal seemed certain.
The Fifers made it 2-0 on 63 minutes. An Alan Cook cross was headed down by Nathan Austin and Ross Brown bundled the ball over the line.
East Fife put the icing on the cake on 86 minutes as Mullen met a Brown corner on the volley 25 yards out and the ball bulged the net.
