Murray Davidson can now see the funny side of adding yet another “bizarre” injury to a long, long list.
But, at the time, the St Johnstone midfielder feared that crashing into the Motherwell dugout could have been one on his more serious ones.
“I whacked my knee off a metal bar and it went into spasm afterwards,” he explained.
“It was quite worrying because after I went back on it didn’t feel right at all.
“It was a fair knock on it and there was an impact, so I couldn’t continue.
“It felt even worse than against Alashkert in the summer, I was looking down at it and it was in spasm so I had to come off.
“But I wakened up the next day and it was bruised and a bit swollen, but there was no lasting damage.
“It was just a knock, I know what a proper knew injury feels like so was glad it was nothing serious.
“I would have been fine to play on Sunday if the game had been on.”
Davidson added: “It was one of the stranger injuries I’ve had, I’ve never tackled a dugout before.
“I was just running and the speed I was going at just took me off the pitch into the Motherwell dugout.
“I just remember running in that direction, couldn’t stop and then scattering all their subs.
“I was lying under the seats at one point it was definitely one of my more bizarre ones.
“Once you come off the pitch it’s astroturf then concrete, so I just couldn’t stop myself.”
Davidson was philosophical about the circumstances of the injury – which forced him off early in the defeat to the Steelmen.
“I don’t know how they would fix it because a lot of grounds are the same,” he said.
“I certainly don’t blame anyone at Motherwell, it was just a freakish one.
“If I had been running 10 yards further it wouldn’t have happened, so it would be a hard one to solve.”
Davidson is happy with his overall fitness, and his form.
“I have started the last 10 or 15 games and have only missed one game through injury this season,” he pointed out.
“I’m as strong as I’ve felt for a long time. Every time I have a good game people say I’m back to my best and when I have a bad one, it’s because I’m still off it.
“All I know is that I have struggled for fitness over the last two years but now I am as confident in my body as I ever have.
“You need games to get back to that level and that’s what I’ve had.
“Over the last two years I have never been able to get a long run of games but now I have and I’m happy with my performances.
“The one thing I need to add is more goals because I should really have double figures by now.
“So scoring more often is something I’d like to do.”
Weather permitting, Davidson will probably be back in the Saints team for their all-Premiership Scottish Cup clash against Kilmarnock at McDiarmid Park.
“You always want a home draw,” said Davidson. “That’s what we got but it’s going to be hard.
“They beat us down there and then gave us a very difficult game here in Perth a few weeks ago.
“They have players who can hurt us and we have players who can hurt them.
“I have been impressed by Killie this season and every time they slip down the table a wee bit they pull a result out.
“That shows they have a lot of character to go with having good players.
“They will be looking to get a run going after getting a good draw with Hearts last weekend.
“But we’re at home and we’re confident that if we play well then we’re capable of winning.”
