Dundee 1 Forfar 1 (3-1 AET): Super-sub saves Dark Blues

Forfar made Dundee battle for the victory at Dens Park.
Forfar made Dundee battle for the victory at Dens Park.

It was another late, late show from Dundee last night as they progressed to the Ramsdens Cup quarter-finals at the expense of a brave Forfar side, going through 3-1 after extra time.

The Dark Blues had won in the league on Saturday against Alloa thanks to a Kevin McBride penalty deep into injury time. But they left it even later against Dick Campbell’s part-timers.

The game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes but Dundee struck twice in extra-time with super-sub Peter MacDonald hitting a double with an exquisite free-kick and a last-gasp cooly-hit second.

Dundee are now awaiting Thursday’s last-eight draw at Hampden Park.

A relieved Dark Blues manager John Brown said: “That wee bit of quality in extra time made all the difference. But all credit to Dick’s team. They are big, they are strong and they make it very difficult.

“They are probably feeling hard done by but we are just glad to get through.

“Peter MacDonald made a big difference when he came on. He scored two great goals. His free-kick was fantastic and was still rising when it hit the net.

“To be fair to Forfar, they were throwing everything at it at the end and we managed to get them on the counter-attack.

“But we have suffered a number of injuries to Gavin Rae, Kevin McBride, MacDonald and Iain Davidson.”

The Forfar boss left without speaking to the media.
