Dundee defender Matt Lockwood senses history could be about to repeat itself for the Dark Blues.
Lockwood can see the same determination in the current squad of Dens Park players that fuelled last season’s incredible 23-game unbeaten run which overcame a 25-point deduction and staved off relegation.
It’s a different set of circumstances as well as players this time around, but he believes Ross County’s 11-point lead over the Dark Blues can still be closed.
Dundee have won their last five matches and produced the eye-catching result of the day on Saturday by thrashing pre-season promotion favourites Hamilton 6-1 on their own patch.
”These are exciting times”, the Englishman pointed out. ”We are taking one game at a time but ultimately there’s no reason why we can’t go on another run like last season.
”When we went into administration last October I said we could do it and Stephen O’Donnell actually laughed.
”Sure, we had guys like Gary Harkins, Craig Forsyth and Sean Higgins in the team but the gaffer has replaced those guys.
”It’s not rocket science. Our next target is to catch Falkirk who are two points ahead of us and, once we have done that, set our sights on Ross County, then see where it takes us.”
The capture of ex-Rangers and Scotland man Gavin Rae has sparked Dundee’s revival and Lockwood is full of praise for the midfielder.
He added: ”Gavin has been a great signing. He’s really kicked us on that extra 5% recently and poses a big goal threat from midfield.
”Now the boys are expecting to win every time they go out on to the pitch rather than just hoping it’s going to happen. That’s a crucial difference.
“I think other teams know we had a poor start to the season but might not relish playing us now.”
