Two teenage boys have been charged after allegedly malicious calls were made to the coastguard.
Police Scotland confirmed a 15 and a 16-year-old had been charged under the Communications Act following the incident which saw a rescue effort swing into action off the Kirkcaldy coast.
A report will now be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
Police would like to remind the public that it is a crime to make malicious or false calls to the emergency services.
A spokesperson said hoax calls not only wasted valuable resources but can endanger lives by diverting vital services for genuine emergencies.
Anyone found to be making this type of call will be pursued by the police and are likely to be charged.
