Perth politicians call for last-minute rethink on new road through city’s crematorium

Liz Smith MSP and Councillor Alexander Stewart examine plans for the road that would cut through the Garden of Remembrance.

A controversial road layout which would shave land off the edge of the Perth Crematorium gardens should be rerouted, say local politicians.

Liz Smith MSP and the councillor for Perth City South, Alexander Stewart, met council officials to press the case for a rethink on the proposed route.

“It is now really urgent that Perth and Kinross Council acknowledges the extent of the anger being expressed in the local community,” said Ms Smith.

“It is not too late for a last-minute alteration to the proposed route, and that is what needs to happen without any delay.

“For hundreds of people whose loved ones lie in the cemetery or who are remembered by the memorials within the gardens, the current proposal to build the new road at that particular location is wholly inappropriate.

“They feel very badly let down by a council which has not paid any attention to the strength of feeling in the local community and who seem destined to go ahead, whatever the sensitivities.”

Mr Stewart echoed her views, saying: “The fact that over 2,000 local residents from across Perth and Kinross have expressed their opposition to the current proposals is significant and their concerns must be taken into account.”
