Fife Council leader David Ross has revealed measures he hopes will help keep Tesco’s Kirkcaldy store open.
Staff and customers were left reeling with the news the retailer was to close its Hunter Street supermarket, with the loss of 189 jobs.
Mr Ross has now written to Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis with a rescue plan.
He has also called for an urgent face-to-face meeting with Mr Lewis.
The news comes as Fife Council is hosting a rally, with staff and Fife College students, at 10am this Saturday outside the Town House in Kirkcaldy to support the bid to keep the store open.
Councillors from across all parties are calling on local people to join with them to show the retail giants their local supermarket is more than just a store.
The move follows an unprecedented turnout to a public meeting.
Mr Ross said: “We understand the difficulties Tesco are facing but we need them to understand that, for Kirkcaldy, Tesco isn’t just another supermarket, it is a town centre hub for many of our most vulnerable citizens.
“We are supporting this gathering to help the local population make their voices heard and to show Tesco the strength of feeling there is in the town.
“We want them to work with us to try to find a solution which benefits everyone.”
Local area committee chairman Neil Crooks said he did not know if Tesco management fully understood the impact the closure will have on the whole town.
“This rally will help bring together individuals, local businesses and a number of different organisations so we can shout with one voice that we need the store to remain open,” he said.
