Brechin might have tasted defeat for the first time since October seven days ago, but boss Ray McKinnon insists that setback should not dent their League One momentum.
A run of 14 games without a loss ended at the Falkirk Stadium last Saturday as City exited the Scottish Cup, but it will be back to the bread and butter of the promotion hunt this afternoon as they host much-fancied Morton at Glebe Park.
The Greenock side have been installed as many bookmakers’ favourites for the title following their wheeling and dealing in January, but Brechin are in with a real shout of securing automatic promotion themselves sitting eight points behind present league leaders Stranraer but with two games in hand.
So with the fight for at least a top four place set to be a fierce one whatever happens in the coming weeks, McKinnon was pleased to see his side prove they were more than a match for one of the Championship’s top contenders last week.
“Sometimes the players can be a wee bit disappointed when they put so much effort into a game like the Falkirk game and not get anything, but I’m pretty sure it will have a positive effect on us,” he said.
“I thought we were different class, limited Falkirk to very little and I thought we were the better side for 70 minutes or so.
“It was our first defeat in 15 games so it’s about how you bounce back from that, and we’ve got a big game against Morton in which to do that.
“But I think the guys could walk away from the Falkirk game with a lot of credit because to go a goal down after 11 minutes and respond the way we did takes a lot of character.”
City have no injury worries ahead of this afternoon’s fixture.
