A dramatic river rescue at Perth ended successfully on Saturday night when a man was hauled to safety from the freezing waters of the Tay.
Prompt action by police and firefighters was credited with saving the man’s life.
“They worked well together, there is no doubt they saved his life,” said a police spokesman.
A member of public alerted police around 7.30pm that a man was threatening to jump into the river at Tay Street.
Police officers were rapidly on the scene and the man was seen to plunge into the water.
He was swept several hundred yards downstream but the officers kept sight of the man as he headed towards the stretch of river off Shore Road.
They lost sight of him but shouts led them to a spot where the man had swum towards the riverbank and was hanging on to an overhanging branch.
Firefighters from Perth and Dunkeld raced into action and, using a ladder and throw lines, plucked the man to safety, bringing the incident to a successful conclusion within 30 minutes.
The man was taken to Perth Royal Infirmary by ambulance for a check-up.
