Anger as makeshift Travellers’ site left in disarray

TVs, dirty plates and beer bottles are among the rubbish left at a Dundee industrial estate used as a campsite by Travellers.

Around seven caravans moved on to land near the old Aviva offices on Luna Place at the city’s technology park last month but it is understood the group has now moved on to Aberdeen.

Piles of rubbish, including old TVs and phones, dirty dishes, clothes and boxes full of empty beer bottles, have appeared on the estate.

The disused car park in the park was used as an unofficial campsite on several occasions last year and calls were made for the owners to take action.

West End councillor Fraser Macpherson, pictured, slammed the mess that had been left.

He said: “This is completely irresponsible. This behaviour is not acceptable, no matter who does it.

“I have already been in contact with the council, when I heard the Travellers were there, and know that the local authority will be willing to help with the clean-up. However, this is private land and will have to involve the landlord.

“As much as the council will clean the mess, the cost will not come from the public purse.”

Mr Macpherson said he hoped the owners would take precautions to prevent further occupations.

He added: “I would call on the owners to take all reasonable steps to secure the grounds in a way that is practical and can ensure that the grounds cannot be occupied in this way again.”

The local authority and private businesses are often forced to go through the courts to remove caravans from their land despite there being a public site for Travellers at Tealing.
