A front-line rescue and rehabilitation service for wildlife in Tayside has plans to expand its premises in Broughty Ferry.
Shanwell Wildlife Rescue Centre, based at Broughty Castle barracks, provides a dedicated volunteer wildlife rescue centre for the area and wants to lease the former Esplanade tennis and putting pavilion at Rugby Terrace.
The charitable organisation has put forward its proposal to the city council’s leisure and communities department.
“We plan on staying at our current location, but we also need to expand as we’re limited with the kind of species we can help,” said founder and trustee, Gareth Norman, yesterday.
“At the moment we can’t have the public visit our centre, but we’re hoping to get the lease of the Esplanade and also the land beside it. This will also allow members of the public to bring casualties to us and ensure we have plenty of space for aviaries and helping the injured wildlife regain strength before being released.”
The centre hopes to have a reception and waiting area, as well as treatment rooms, within the proposed building at the pavilion.
