Raith Rovers boss John McGlynn is hoping to welcome back defender Mark Campbell to his first-team squad soon but is still unable to state exactly when that will be.
The 32-year-old suffered a catalogue of injuries including a chipped kneecap in a car accident in Kilmarnock and has not kicked a ball in anger since February.
Although the former St Johnstone man has trained throughout pre-season, McGlynn has not yet set a date for Campbell’s return but remains hopeful that it will be a matter of weeks and not months.
McGlynn said, “He started pre-season training along with everyone but has hit a bit of a brick wall of late.
“He had to back off as his knee and hamstring were both sore.”
He added, “He’s not trained with the first team either because we’ve been playing a lot of games.”
Campbell’s progress has been astonishing, considering the severity of the car accident which resulted in him having to be cut free by fire crews.
He was returning from his day job as a fitness instructor at Kilmarnock prison, being one of Raith’s part-time players.
Although this may have slowed down his rehabilitation, McGlynn remains confident that his vice-captain will be back in the navy blue shirt before too long.
He said, “It’s hard to put a timescale on it but he is getting closer.”
