Captaincy talks at Dens

Dundee manager Gordon Chisholm is set to hold talks with Gary Harkins to determine whether being captain is a role the star midfielder is comfortable with.

The former Partick Thistle player has been wearing the skipper’s armband in recent matches but Chisholm wants to be sure the added responsibility is not going to impact on Harkins’ general play.

Last season former club captain Eric Paton admitted the pressure of leading the side affected his game, and the Dens Park gaffer is determined the same thing will not happen to Harkins.

“Gary is doing all right as skipper but I still think there is a lot to come from him playing wise,” he said.

“So the captaincy is something I will speak to him about later this week.

“Being skipper can affect players in different ways which is why I want to discuss it with him.

“He seems content enough but I just want to make sure.

“Last season, for example, Eric Paton said that being captain affected his game and I do not want to put any added responsibility on someone if it is going to do that to them.

“I want Gary to continue playing the way he has done, getting forward and scoring goals.

“So I will be speaking to him and then I will make a decision and announce it before the start of the season.”

Meanwhile, Chisholm admitted he is no further forward in establishing when Mickael Antoine-Curier will return from compassionate leave in Paris visiting his sick father.

“I have phoned Mickael and sent him a text saying I would like him back Wednesday or Thursday but I am waiting for a reply,” he added.
