John McGlynn aiming even higher for Raith Rovers

After last season’s successful return to first division football, Raith Rovers boss John McGlynn has challenged his players to surpass their previous points tally come the end of the coming campaign.

The Kirkcaldy club had an impressive season last year, finishing a respectable seventh in the league and enjoying a Scottish Cup run that saw them reach the semi-finals at Hampden.

Now McGlynn wants his players to set their sights even higher, with the Rovers boss keen to see his side build on the experience gained last term.

Rovers are going the right way about it, having swept aside Partick Thistle 4-0 in the league opener.

McGlynn said, “Last year we targeted 12 points a quarter and we didn’t actually match that as we ended up with 42 points.

“We were six points short of 48 but we’re hoping we can get a little bit better than that this year so we’re targeting 14 points a quarter.”

He added, “There were a few things we wanted to eradicate from last season.

“We didn’t score enough early goals, we wanted to score more goals at home and we didn’t want to lose late goals, so I think we’ve ticked a few boxes so far in what we’re trying to do.”

McGlynn was obviously delighted to see his side come flying out of the traps in their first game and hopes the players can build on that platform when they visit Queen of the South this weekend.

He said, “If we’d been offered 4-0 before 3pm we obviously would have taken it so I’m very happy to get that start.

“It’s only one game of course and we’ve got 35 to go, but it is a good start and we scored four goals.”

Captain Iain Davidson will miss Saturday’s game through suspension and Mark Campbell will also be missing through injury, although keeper David McGurn has recovered from a knock.
