Meet Longforgan’s merry band of straw men

There is a famous scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller The Birds in which a flock of crows gathers menacingly before launching an attack on star Tippi Hedren and a group of school pupils.

By the look of this street scene, any crows that tried something similar in the Carse of Gowrie village of Longforgan would soon be reeling skywards in shock, never to return.

These surprisingly well-dressed scarecrows were all created by local families and organisations as part of the village’s annual gala in June.

Artist Stan Ginter, who lives at Grange, went around the scarecrow trail, photographing 62 of them.

He then created this unique montage, using the Longforgan Coaching Inn and Main Street as a backdrop.

The straw-stuffed characters present include a couple of golfers, a waiter, lollipop person, ballerina, builder up a ladder, surfer with board, hang glider flyer, kite flyer, bull rider, astronomer with telescope, Indiana Jones look-a-like and one poor soul who is just hanging upside down on a rope.

There does not seem to be an accepted collective noun for scarecrows but maybe in the artist’s honour we should call them a ‘ginter’?
