The seventh generation Passat will start at £18,470 for the saloon and £19,745 for the estate.
Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show last month and now available to order, it is properly a new car rather than the more common ‘refresh’ that manufacturers do when their models reach a certain age.
Apart from the roof, every panel and piece of glass is completely new, and with the latest technology and efficiency measures, Volkswagen are aiming to make the Passat among the most advanced and economical cars in its class.
Offered in S, SE and Sport trim levels, all models now get an iPod interface and leather multifunction steering wheel.
The 2.0 litre TDI 140 unit is likely to be the best selling engine, and Volkswagen reckon the estate will outsell the saloon for the first time.
The eco BlueMotion version will arrive early next year and deliver economy of 68.8mpg with CO2 emissions of 109g/km.
