More than 50 police officers are assigned to investigating the murder of the Fife businessman shot in the head in a gangland-style hit in Glenrothes on Sunday night.
As the probe into the murder of Mohammed Siddique entered its fifth day, police scoured rooftops and gardens to try and find the weapon.
Father-of-three Mr Siddique had been visiting tenant Davie Dalgleish in Forres Drive at around 9.25pm when the gunman entered the flat and shot Mr Siddique and Mr Dalgleish before running off.
Mr Siddique died instantly. Mr Dalgleish survived and has worked closely with the police since being released from hospital on Monday.
As the investigation into the double shooting continues, a cherry picker was brought into the Tanshall area to give officers a birds-eye view of the block of flats and surrounding garages in case the gunman disposed of the weapon there.
The police are seeking a small handgun or pistol, after forensic investigations appeared to rule out suggestions a shotgun had been used.
Chief Superintendent Tom Ewing said, “A lot of information has been gathered so far, with a major incident room set up in Glenrothes Police Station.
“A large police presence is being maintained in the area, both to reassure the public and ensure all residents in the immediate area are contacted by an officer doing door-to-door inquiries.
“Over 50 officers are committed to this stage of the inquiry as we ensure that any information that can assist us has been captured no matter how small.
“I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to anybody who has information that might assist us with this inquiry to contact the police.”
Mr Siddique’s family are “working closely” with police in a bid to establish a possible motive for the killing, while friends and business associates have been approached as detectives seek to close the net on the killer.
Police said they have been “encouraged” by the “very supportive” response from the public. However, detectives refused to confirm or deny suggestions they have a suspect in mind. All they have said so far is that they are keen to speak to a man in his 30s, with short brown hair.
He was of stocky build and wearing a dark zip-up top. He was seen near the flats by several witnesses at the time of the incident.
Mr Siddique, whose family own several properties and shops and have business interests and contacts in Tayside and Perth, is said to have made “a lot of enemies,” according to several locals claims the police have been exploring over recent days.
Mr Siddique’s family have been reluctant to speak about his death and have asked for privacy.
