Plans for five-star hotel at Kinfauns back on agenda

Plans for a controversial “iconic and unique” luxury hotel overlooking the River Tay at Kinfauns have resurfaced.

The ambitious multi-million-pound project for a five-star hotel has a long planning history dating back to 2004 and the latest application lodged with Perth and Kinross Council seeks to meet conditions previously laid down by councillors.

Despite objections from planning officials that the plan for the 300-bedroom hotel was “insensitive” four years ago councillors backed the scheme on the grounds that it would have major positive economic benefits in terms of jobs and tourism for Perth and the wider area.

They did, however, accept that a series of conditions should be met before the application could progress. Among the conditions was that no development could begin until the Kinfauns grade-separated interchange on the A90 had been completed a requirement which has now been met.

The application by JWK Properties of Cottown is for the approval of measures specified in the conditions and it lays out how these have been met. In particular the hotel would be confined to the western edge of the development site and has been designed with low floor and ceiling height.

The development would not be visible from historic Elcho Castle, which lies across the river, and tree planting would ensure long-term screening.

According to the application paperwork lodged with the council the target determination date for the latest application is April 14.

If approved the plan would still face further hurdles as it would ultimately have to be referred to the Scottish Government for determination.
