A violent criminal who absconded from Castle Huntly on December 15, just a fortnight after being moved to the open prison, has been traced by police.
Ian McDonald (28) was found in a house in Glasgow on Thursday and will appear at Perth Sheriff Court on Friday.
McDonald, from Paisley, was convicted of assault to severe injury and sentenced to four years in prison in 2009.
After he absconded, police warned the public not to approach him.
An SPS spokesman said at the time, “He had been moved to Castle Huntly at the beginning of the month.
“The open estate is designed to test individuals and it is always disappointing when they fail that test.”
He added, “He will go back to closed conditions once caught to serve the rest of his sentence.”
Opposition politicians immediately demanded answers and said security must be tightened with Castle Huntly and Noranside, near Forfar – which houses a number of sex offenders – set to merge.
