A politician has called for an urgent probe into pedestrian safety on the A9 following the tragic death of schoolgirl Elli Williams.
The 16-year-old Morrison’s Academy pupil died after being hit by a number of vehicles close to her home town of Auchterarder on Tuesday night.
In the wake of the tragedy Perth MSP Roseanna Cunningham spoke of the “urgent need” to improve pedestrian safety in the area.
“As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of Elli Williams continue, I have contacted Transport Scotland seeking an urgent discussion with them,” she said.
“I want to know what steps they-or others-can take in the short, medium and long term to improve pedestrian safety in the vicinity of Gleneagles station and the A9.”
Meanwhile, Ms Cunningham admitted that members of the local community were still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
“I would like to extend my sympathy to Elli’s family, friends, teachers and fellow pupils,” the MSP continued.
“This awful accident has left the whole of the local community in shock.”
A police investigation is continuing into the tragedy, which caused the closure of the A9 south of Perth throughout much of Wednesday.
Detectives said they are continuing to piece together Elli’s last known movements in a bid to establish why she was on the carriageway when tragedy struck.
Meanwhile, friends and acquaintances are struggling to cope with the death.
Superintendent Tony Beveridge, deputy divisional commander, said youngsters were being provided with as much support as possible.
“We are working closely with local schools and the local authority to ensure that the right support mechanisms are in place,” he said.
A police liaison officer is keeping the teenager’s family up to date with t he investigation.
It is thought police are yet to trace the first vehicle in collision with Elli, as it did not stop.
Four other vehicles that struck her in quick succession halted and their drivers were spoken to.
Elli has been described by her parents as a “wonderful” daughter and sister.
