A Dundee teenager who broke a news vendor’s leg by pushing over her kiosk was told by a sheriff to expect a jail term when he is sentenced this month.
Daniel Patrick Wilkinson (17), Graham Street, admitted that on December 15 in the High Street he culpably and recklessly pushed over a news kiosk, resulting in the occupant Joanne Dunn sustaining a broken leg and that he committed the offence while on bail.
He admitted assaulting Constable Paul Herd the next day by spitting on him while on bail.
Depute fiscal Kirsty Anderson told the court Miss Dunn had been in the kiosk outside Boots at around 5.15pm and was aware of a person approaching.
She felt the kiosk being pushed over and screamed and landed on her right leg.
A witness heard her screams and saw Wilkinson walking away with “a smug look on his face.”
Miss Dunn required surgery for two fractures.
The court heard how another witness saw Wilkinson running off in the direction of Whitehall Street. The first witness then tried to follow him. A third witness heard him on a mobile phone saying, “I need to get out of town, I knocked over a kiosk.”
A person contacted police after a media appeal to say that Wilkinson was the male seen in CCTV footage. On being detained, he lashed out violently and spat at Mr Herd.
Deferring sentence for reports until January 20, Sheriff Tom Hughes said the offences were “very serious” and that he would face a custodial sentence. Wilkinson was remanded in custody.
