An Arbroath man who plans to embark on a 17-day journey through France, Spain and Portugal by bike is searching for a Scottish charity to support.
John Short (46), originally from Wales, cycled penniless from the Algarve in Portugal to the UK, having gone on the run from the authorities after becoming involved in various criminal activities.
His book, entitled Bins, Benches and Broken Bikes, charts the incredible and “cathartic” journey which began with the breakdown of his marriage and the loss of his children in 2006.
He plans to write a second book about his latest venture, which is set to begin later this month. He said, “I would be prepared to represent any Scottish charity which may be able to use my journey as a platform for their charity.”
Mr Short added that he hoped this year’s expedition would be as character building as the last. He said, “This is another ‘rough it’ journey to revisit the feelings I had prior to writing the last book.
“It certainly made me more benevolent in contrast to the character I was previously.”
